Call for 2012 Award Applications


The Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (TSHF) is currently accepting applications for the 2012 research and service awards. The application deadline is December 15, 2011, for awards to be presented at the annual luncheon on Friday, March 9, 2012, during the TSHA Convention in San Antonio. TSHF Research Grants are supported by the following funds:

  • Lear Ashmore Research Endowment Fund - Established in 1992, this general Research Fund of the Foundation was named to honor Lear Ashmore.

  • Tina E. Bangs Research Endowment Fund - Established by Tina Bangs in 1992 to support research.

  • President’s Research Endowment Fund - Established in 1993 by ten Past Presidents of the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the fund has been added to by additional Past Presidents.

  • Empress Zedler Research Endowment Fund - Established in 1999 by former students and colleagues of Empress Zedler to support research in the areas of reading and writing.

  • Sandy Friel-Patti Research in Child Language International Travel Fund -Established in 2004 by the family and friends of Sandy Friel-Patti, Past President of TSHA and of the Foundation. Supports travel to present doctorial research in child language in an international venue.

The TSHF Service Awards recognize and support clinical excellence and leadership:

  • Burtis-Vogel/Elkins Community Service Award - Established in 2001, Awards given from this fund are intended to advance the work of speech-language pathologists who exceed expectations in providing services that benefit the community at large or who advance the field of speech-language pathology.

  • TSHA Young Leadership Award – This award was created in 2010 by the Executive Board of the TSHA in order to foster leadership within the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology. This award is intended for students or young professionals in the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology who have demonstrated leadership abilities and who show potential to become leaders of the TSHA.

Most of the scholarships administered by TSHF are affiliated with a specific university graduate program. Check the list below to see if your university is one of those offering scholarships. Applications for most of the scholarships are made directly to the university program or the sponsoring organization, ie, HACD or EPSHA. For university-sponsored scholarships, each graduate program will announce when it is ready to accept applications for the 2012 awards.

  • Madeline Brand – El Paso Speech & Hearing Association
  • Jeanne Braniff -Terrell – available for a student selected from these four north Texas universities: UTD, TWU, UNT and TCU; an applicant from each university is selected by the university and sent the TSHF scholarship committee for the final decision.
  • Margaret Crabtree – University of Houston
  • Elizabeth Carrow Woolfolk – Our Lady of the Lake University
  • Donna Fox – full-time doctoral students in any Texas program; see TSHF website for application information.
  • Gardner Gateley – Baylor University
  • Gil Hanke – Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA)
  • Houston Assoc. for Communication Disorders – for UH, Lamar University or Houston area TWU distance program students.
  • Sara Haynes – student interested in neurogenics in any Texas program; see TSHF website for application information.
  • Judith Keller – Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
  • Anne Mauzy – UT Austin
  • Grace Middleton – El Paso Speech & Hearing Association
  • San Antonio Speech Language Hearing Assoc. – Our Lady of the Lake University in conjunction with SASLHA.
  • Sherry Sancibrian – Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
  • Elnita O. Stanley – Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA)
